Description

The improvements consisted of design and construction of new ramps, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, on each side of the station. The ramps replaced the station’s elevators and were added to the existing pedestrian undercrossing, making for more convenient, reliable access. The existing elevator shafts were redesigned to accommodate a public restroom and vending machines. Three passenger canopies also were installed along the station’s west platform to provide shade and protection for rail passengers waiting for a train.

Other significant project elements included parking lot paving and striping, connecting train platforms through a tunnel, construction of crosswalks from parking lots, providing upgrades to station lighting and electrical and mechanical equipment, and coordinating utilities relocations.

Services

PreScience served as Prime PM/CM consultant to provide design/constructability review and full‐service construction management services for the construction of Laguna Niguel Metrolink Station Upgrade. Our services included contract QA and safety compliance, construction inspection and engineering, construction administration, project scheduling, contract dispute assistance, change order management, environmental and storm water monitoring, and QA construction staking, and coordination with other entities.

Challenges

This project faced several challenges conflated by a limited staging area, as well as a need to maintain pedestrian access during work. In addition, we encountered an unforeseen hazardous material (asbestos pipe) and worked closely with the contractor to resolve the issue.
